If we’re being honest, there’s a lot of marketing noise out there. With ads spanning anywhere from outside your door to your TV or anywhere on the internet, the competition is as fierce as it is plentiful. In fact, we see around 10,000 ads a day between physical and digital. Sheesh! With that in mind, marketers will need a little more than “hey buddy, buy my product!” to stand out and earn your money. 

But the question remains: if the world is so inundated with ads and customers are so jaded from the constant “sell, sell, sell…”  — then how can you connect with customers?

Do you just give up, then? Well, no, of course not! But sometimes, easing up on the “selling” gas pedal and approaching it differently does wonders.

Let’s talk about Experiential Marketing.

What is Experiential Marketing?

Experiential Marketing is a strategic marketing approach that involves crafting a specific experience for a customer to genuinely engage them on a deeper, emotional level. This creates a customer who is willing to learn more about your brand and what it offers of their own volition, which is key to developing lifelong champions of your brand.

Experiential Marketing is sort of like selling without selling. In simplest terms, it’s like a soft sell. You give your customers an event or an experience to remember, and their takeaway is (ideally) an improved perception of the brand and its products/services.

It’s sort of like making friends, right? You wouldn’t walk up to someone you’re interested in befriending and say, “Hey, we should be friends because we both have something the other person wants.” — that’d be weird… at least, if the goal is to make a long-term genuine connection. Instead, you might instead opt to ask them if they want to hang out with you and experience something together (see a movie, go to dinner, play some sports… whatever floats your boat).

Fundamentally, with experiential marketing, you’re looking to do the same thing. You’re creating opportunities for authentic interactions where the value exchange feels natural and enjoyable. This approach builds trust and fosters a sense of community around your brand, as customers feel like they are part of something special. 

By focusing on creating meaningful experiences, experiential marketing helps “humanize” your brand, making it more relatable and approachable. This emotional connection is the key to turning occasional customers into loyal advocates who return and actively promote your brand to others.

Is Experiential Marketing Effective?

The short answer? Hell, yeah brother.

Experiential marketing works because it’s an immersive experience where you’re not talking at your customer — you’re involving them. Why is that important? Well, for four big reasons.

  • Customer Loyalty: When brands create experiences people love, they’re more likely to keep coming back for more, building loyalty.

  • Going Viral: Awesome experiences can make a brand go viral online when people share their amazing moments with friends, spreading the buzz.

At the core of it all, what sticks with you most about a brand isn’t necessarily what you bought from them but how they made you feel while interacting. Those feelings and experiences tend to stay in your memory long after the purchase is made.

There are three principles that serve experiential marketing above all others: engagement, emotional connection, and authenticity.

  1. Emotional Connection: In my opinion, this should be the first priority. If your campaign’s experience can evoke a genuine emotional response from your customers, you’ve earned your brand a long-lasting bond.
  2. Engagement: Naturally, experiential marketing doesn’t work without experience. The goal is to actively engage your customers and encourage them to be active participants rather than passive observer.
  3. Authenticity: Experiential marketing only works its best when you are genuinely trying to engage your audience. Don’t try to BS customers — they’ll be able to tell from a mile away. The more genuine the interaction, the more likely the experience will stay top of mind for that customer.

If you aren’t already familiar with real-life examples of experiential marketing, it’s entirely reasonable that this all may be sounding a bit vague. Marketing “experiences” can mean a whole lot of different things, after all. Let’s make this a bit more concrete.

While these are by no means exhaustive, let’s go over the most common types of implementing experiential marketing.

Customer Centric Marketing – Red Bull Full Throttle!

Red Bull stands out as a prime example of experiential marketing excellence. With a history spanning over three decades, Red Bull has emerged as the top energy drink globally. The staggering consumption of approximately 7.9 billion cans worldwide in 2022 underscores its immense popularity and resonance with its loyal customer base. In the same year, its sales reached nearly $16.5 billion, overshadowing its closest rival, Monster Energy drink, which garnered just over $6 billion in sales. What’s truly remarkable is that Red Bull allocates a modest 20% of its marketing budget to paid advertisements!

When executed effectively, experiential events have the power to enhance brand perception and drive profitability. Red Bull understands this concept well and goes all out by creating captivating spectacles that leave a lasting impression. While not every company can orchestrate an extravagant Flugtag race like Red Bull does, there are ways to scale down and capture the essence of such engaging experiences. The key objective is to connect with customers on a deeper level so they can grasp and resonate with the brand’s ethos.

Red Bull’s involvement in mountain biking has significantly impacted the sport, particularly through events like the Red Bull Rampage that push boundaries and thrill enthusiasts. The athletes at Rampage showcase their skills on challenging terrains, executing daring tricks like backflips over daunting obstacles.

Not only does Red Bull cater to the desires of its audience, but it also enhances the X Type Games by prominently featuring its logo across various platforms, including mountain slopes.

Although Red Bull may not enjoy the same widespread fame as Coca Cola, it has established a unique position in the energy drink industry. Its recognizable branding and affiliation with extreme sports and excitement continue to differentiate it from its rivals.

Product Sampling & Demonstrations

This is one of the most tried-and-true examples of experiential marketing. It’s an oldie, but it’s worked for a long time. I’d be willing to bet that you’ve participated in many—like getting a free sample at Costco or your local grocery store. 

Of course, this strategy heavily relies on the context of what’s being promoted. Food is an easier thing to get people to try and leave with a good taste in their mouth (both figuratively and literally). Eating is an experience, so that in itself is pretty engaging. Just keep that in mind when considering this approach; otherwise, it can come across as pretty lifeless if there isn’t anything particularly engaging or enticing.

I’ve been buying certain grocery items for many years based on a simple interaction: being given a sample.

Live Events Marketing / Activations

Live events and activities are cornerstones of experiential marketing strategies. Their goal is to create immersive experiences by bringing brands to life—whether through brand-sponsored festivals, product launches, or even pop-up shops. 

For example, take Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, a video game developer and publisher most known for their game, World Of Warcraft — and their yearly live event, BlizzCon.

Blizzcon has become more than just a convention — it’s a legitimate cultural phenomenon in the gaming world. In 2023, the event attracted over 40,000 attendees, all explicitly to celebrate the franchise, dressing up, playing games, and more. The event is filled with activated spaces themed around their video games, immersing fans like no other and creating an unforgettable experience. The event also serves as a direct channel for Blizzard to connect with its fans, providing exclusive insights, announcements, and access to the creators of their favorite games.

And in turn, the fans show up for Blizzard Entertainment as well. In addition to spending money to access the event — tickets often sell out within minutes, generating millions in revenue — and any merchandise they purchase there, Blizzcon generates an insane amount of media buzz, consistently trending on social media platforms with millions of mentions and interactions. Offering this space to their fans allows Blizzard to strengthen the bond between them and their community. There’s a reason people have been playing World of Warcraft for nearly two decades, boasting over 100 million lifetime accounts.

Branded Marketing Experiences: Immersive Physical Environments & Installations

Successful physical branded experiences have an atmosphere that resonates with people by offering something unique and engaging. For example, imagine you’re a kid again. Going into a Walmart is one thing and having your parents buy you some LEGOs. Now imagine if, instead, you went to a LEGO shop filled with colorful installations and Play Stations of the product. Naturally, the excitement level will be much different between the two.

This is how brands can turn casual observers into passionate advocates who will remember and share their experience long after it’s over — if you can evoke that sense of childlike wonder and magic in your branded experiences, you’re golden!

These installations cross generations and allow families to have the same level of fun whether you’re 10 or 30. For instance, LEGO’s flagship store in New York City attracts over 2 million visitors annually, showcasing the power of immersive brand experiences.

Plus, these installations also naturally encourage social sharing. Visitors who are engaged and making an event out of their day are likely to take photos and videos of their experience and share them on social media, spreading the word to their networks. In fact, user-generated content from these experiences can increase brand engagement by up to 28%. Now, that’s a recipe for success!

Interactive Online Branded Experience

While the most obvious examples of experiential marketing involve the physical space… does this mean that’s the only way? Not by a long shot, man!

One of my personal favorite examples of a widely successful digital, experiential marketing campaign comes from Spotify. Specifically — Spotify Wrapped. And it’s almost so simple in concept you’d think there’s no way it’d work. But it does. Year after year! Around 10 years straight.

In case you don’t know what Spotify Wrapped is, it’s a yearly digital event for Spotify where they show users data regarding their personalized listening activity on the platform. It gives you fun little tidbits like “Your Most Listened To Artist” or “Favorite Genre” and even creates playlists based on your year of listening.

Over the years, it’s evolved to include even more personalized data points. It gets pretty granular. There are no additional payments, tickets, or requirements of any sort. It’s just freely available to all Spotify users every year.

And the best part is that it virtually promotes itself.

Spotify Wrapped

People are naturally excited to share their music tastes — it’s a form of self-expression, after all. Spotify has brilliantly capitalized on this by including data points that show how users compare to the rest of Spotify listeners, such as “you were in the top 1% of Kendrick Lamar listeners.” In 2022, over 90 million Spotify users engaged with Wrapped, with millions sharing their results on social media. Spotify also prompts users to share these data points, encouraging a wave of organic, user-generated content. This communal sharing turns Wrapped into a viral spectacle online every year without fail.s

Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla marketing is an experiential strategy that employs attention-grabbing and unexpected stunts to captivate and intrigue nearby observers by using curiosity to lure them in. But while guerilla marketing typically seems ad-hoc and off-the-cuff by the participants, the irony is that they are anything but. In actuality, guerilla marketing usually involves a lot of planning and curation to be used to the fullest extent.

For example, location and context matter a lot when it comes to this method of experiential marketing. You can’t very well set up an event for a deluxe designer brand watch company on a modest college campus full of students who are trying to stretch their dollars. However, something attractive, practical, and, most importantly, affordable could do pretty well there.

Netflix’s guerilla promotion of the fourth Stranger Things season was a successful global endeavor. Across over 14 counties, it included a combination of projection mapping and physical installations to give the impression that portals were forming to the “Upside Down” (a fictional alternate dimension within the show where everything is inverted). They even got paid actors in hazmat suits to “investigate” these portals — adding to the stunt.

Third Places: You have Probably Been to a Third Place Recently

Public parks, cozy cafes and friendly neighborhood bars are what sociologist Ray Oldenburg refers to as “Third Places” in his book Celebrating the Third Place published in 2000. These are spots where people gather informally and joyfully outside their homes and workplaces.

Personally, I love starting my day at the local coffee shop to break the monotony. It’s a welcoming space where I chat with familiar faces, including the staff and neighbors. The decor is charming, featuring locally made items that add character to the place.

What makes this coffee shop even better is that they’ve set up a small dog park nearby. This adds an extra layer of joy as I spend quality time with my furry companion, Tuck.

When done thoughtfully, with unique branded touchpoints, these third places can create a sense of belonging that keeps you coming back for more. It’s a form of experiential marketing that focuses on building customer relationships and offering tailored activities for their clientele.

How do I get started with experiential marketing?

Getting started with experiential marketing can feel like a lot. Especially when juggling multiple facets of your marketing campaign — between research and strategy, planning and coordination, logistics and execution, marketing and promotion, and even on-site management… well, it’s a lot. It’s pretty easy to throw money in trash if you’re not planning your experiential marketing campaign correctly.

So, let’s break it down into manageable steps and make the process smoother. 

1. Determine Your Audience – Developing a Persona for Experiential Marketing

The first step is knowing who you’re targeting. Understanding your audience is crucial. Who are they, truly? What are their interests and behaviors?

Start by gathering data through surveys, interviews, and feedback. Focus on demographics (age, gender, occupation) and psychographics (interests, values). Analyze this data to find patterns and trends. Identify your customers’ goals, challenges, and preferences. Understanding these aspects will help you create detailed personas that guide your experiential marketing efforts, making them more targeted and effective.

2. Create Memorable Marketing Experiences

Now we can get to the fun part — crafting the experience. This is where creativity shines, and having a creative team that has your back becomes paramount. Think about how you can create an immersive, engaging, and memorable experience. Would interactive technology like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), or any other technologies that are applicable? Is there a way to tailor the event to the individual (like Spotify Wrapped, for example)? Can you engage all of their senses with the design? The list goes on. But the goal should always be to create a narrative that resonates with your audience and leaves a lasting impression.

Now we can get to the fun part — crafting the experience. This is where creativity shines, and having a supportive creative team becomes paramount. Think about how you can create an immersive, engaging, and memorable experience. Consider hands-on activities, such as a hand-building workshop, to engage your audience. Can you tailor the event to the individual, similar to how Spotify Wrapped does? Engage all their senses with thoughtful design elements.

The details are in the design and architecture of the experiences. Create a narrative that resonates with your audience and leaves a lasting impression. For example, you could sponsor a hoop-shooting event. However, the details matter: how will you wrap the event space, such as covering fences or courts to boost enthusiasm?

How will the space be activated beyond the activity itself? How do you create buzz before it happens. Most importantly, how will you make an emotional connection with your audience?

These events are about connecting with your audience in a meaningful way, which creates brand awareness. By focusing on their needs and interests, you can ensure the experience is memorable and impactful.

3. Plan It & Launch It

Real-world (and digital) events can be stressful to plan, and life can be unpredictable, so thorough planning and contingencies are essential. Before going live, your agency should conduct a mock setup to resolve any last-minute issues. During the campaign, be ready to address problems immediately, and continuously monitor and improve the activation. It’s also important to measure your success metrics as the event is ongoing: eg. tracking footfall, interactions, and social media posts. This way, you can adjust the activation as needed while it is live, and you’ll have a goalpost to research and evaluate how it can be improved afterwards. And speaking of…

Finally, Measure and Optimize

After completing your campaign, collect feedback and assess the outcomes. Did you achieve your goals? What aspects were effective and where is there room for improvement? Utilize these insights to enhance your approach for upcoming campaigns.

You could say I’ve been around the block when it comes to knowing web design trends. Since I grew up in the ’90s, the internet (as available to the public) has been around as long as I’ve been alive. I’ve even been making websites for most of that time, too. Well… so long as you count using Freewebs.com or Geocities to make janky fan sites — rest in peace. 

Professionally, I’ve been making websites for around a third of the internet’s lifespan (10 years). So, as I continue to age closer to becoming a suburban dad spending weekends over a grill, it’s interesting to consider how top web design trends will change, too. 

And change, it shall.

The following are my thoughts based on my experiences with web design trends, what I’ve been observing across the industry lately, and how I predict it’ll continue to change in the near future. While I mention some visual web design trends alongside the greater scheme of web design trends, this article is more towards the big picture — especially since visual gimmicks come and go. So I don’t think you need me to tell you, “Minimalism is in!” or something to that effect when it’s never left in the first place.

So, how are the winds of change blowing in the world of web design trends in 2024 and beyond? Well, let’s breeze right into it!

Handmade Graphics: The AI Counter-Movement

Joking aside, in direct response to the advent of AI technologies, I foresee a similarly strong trend at the opposite end of the spectrum. Since tools like Midjourney or Stable Diffusion allow anyone to create images that are near-perfect (from an execution standpoint), I think that many websites will begin to embrace hand-drawn, imperfect, and even messy illustrations. 

This is not to say I don’t think AI is profoundly useful because it is. Below, I describe how you can leverage the power of AI to accomplish many tasks when developing a website, and it will only improve.

Brand awareness relies on design systems that accurately convey your brand to maintain consistency. For this reason, a creative director must examine all of a brand’s components to effectively communicate its meaning through design.

After all, what better way is there to stand out in the sea of “perfect” AI-generated imagery than to appeal to the human element? It’s difficult not to appreciate the authenticity of hand-drawn media, especially when it’s unclear whether the creator of the work was actually a person.

So, while I’m sure every website in the tech field will no doubt be interested in using AI at every turn, I can easily see more humble industries and companies taking advantage of the situation to stand out from the incoming saturation of AI imagery. 

Let’s face it: AI-generated graphics are already becoming fatiguing.

Virtual/Augmented Reality in Web Design

While the use of VR/AR (Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality) is nothing new in the news, I think we will see a lot more of it integrated into websites in 2024 and beyond. If you aren’t aware, mobile website browsing now exceeds all other platform usage. Like, overwhelmingly so — a whopping 55% of all web traffic is mobile now. Shoutout to you if you’re reading this on a phone!

Google even rolled out an update that prioritizes the mobile version of your website when ranking you — solidifying their stance on the importance of mobile-first design.

Since mobile is playing such a huge part now, besides better mobile networks and device performance, I think we’ll start to see websites integrate your phone’s camera (and that’s where AR and VR come into play here).

For example, IKEA, with their IKEA Place app uses AR so that you can quite literally visualize how furniture looks in your room before buying it. It scans your room for dimensions and shows how the furniture would fit with 98% accuracy. Impressive! Or Zenni, which has a website that allows you to upload pictures of your face to create a “3D” view of what their glasses would look like on you – no need to question modernity here; it’s awesome.

I can easily see this trend continuing, and as the technology advances, I’m sure we’ll see more of these integrations as they become more widely available as third-party applications.

For full transparency, I’m a web designer who is a big fan of website builders (specifically Divi by Elegant Themes on WordPress), so my opinion on their use may be skewed in their favor… 

However, it’s still a fact that there are more website builders out there than ever before — the no-code movement is here to stay, which gives me more time to do what I do best – design!

I genuinely foresee more and more websites being created with these tools, and I think at some point very soon they’ll be the go-to method of creating most websites.

Website builders have come a long way since the days of Freewebs and Geocities. Hell, it’s even come a long way from just ten years ago when Squarespace and Wix were essentially glorified template editors (no shade intended — I used them myself, and they served their purpose well!).

But nowadays, website builders such as Divi, Framer, and WebFlow (to name just a few) have been developed in such a way that it’s like working in Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva.

While developers are still needed for more complex or custom functionality, the grand majority of website needs have been democratized by website builders — allowing designers to be hands-on with the design of the website itself (and also minimizing any back-and-forth between developers for small tweaks).

WordPress has always been and will always be a game-changer.

If you wanted to create technically impressive websites, you’d need multiple people working in tandem at entirely different things (a designer and a developer at minimum, for example).

But you’re a designer who uses website builders, and you don’t know code. You can create high-performance websites with a crazy degree of customization. Your imagination is the only limitation.

We are not talking about templates here. You should never use a template as your end product.

I think website builders will continue to trend as a more convenient hand-off tool for clients. With a rudimentary understanding of how the builder works, clients can effectively make simple changes on their own (like changing a headline, swapping out images… etc) without the need to go back and forth for minor edits. Of course, like any tool, there is a learning curve to mastery — but with how well-developed and fairly intuitive many of these builders are, I think this trend will be a net positive for delivering better products to the client.

Bolder Visual Experiences and Storytelling in Web Design

Generally speaking, a grand majority of web design revolves around designing to make things work within those constraints — for instance: image optimization, caching, CDNs, and so on. As internet connections and PC hardware become stronger and faster, so too do the capabilities of websites increase. We can get more creative with websites because… we can do more without sites taking a zillion years to load since the overall standards are improving drastically.

Just think about loading a modern site on a dial-up connection on an ancient PC — yikes! That thing would probably explode.

Now, this isn’t to say that optimization and speed don’t remain paramount. All I’m saying is that we have a bit more room there than we used to.

Website animations are now commonplace, and the tools to create them are more prevalent within website builders.

And since the web has been around long enough now, people are already accustomed to what a good website looks and functions like. These standards are expected now. If your site is slow and looks outdated, it dies out — simple as that.

So, rather than mentioning any given aesthetic in web design trends, I think it’s more valuable to note that web design trends will start leaning more toward creating a more immersive experience. The visual style is secondary. By experience, I’m talking about how interacting with the website feels. We’re getting emotional, baby!

Does scrolling through a website evoke a sense of wonder? Excitement? Mystery? Does it hype you up for a product you’re interested in? Does it tell a story that aligns with your values or makes you recall a memory?

A plain but well-designed site will give you confidence in the product or service. But an immersive and exciting experience will win your audience over.

For example, Apple has been creating these kinds of pages for years, like their latest iPhone 15 Pro landing page — which is choc-full of dynamic images, animations, videos, interactive 3D models, micro-interactions… basically, everything I’m mentioning in this post! Their site almost feels like you’re scrolling through a motion graphic. 

In the past, imitating this would be a very high hurdle to clear. And I’m not talking from an internet speed and PC power standpoint, either. Back in the day, it’d be impossible to do this without many designers and developers who could create this immersive experience.

However, now, the tools to recreate that experience are more accessible than ever. Especially with how much website builders have been advancing (as I mentioned earlier). 

Of course, you’ll always need an experienced web designer to capture Apple’s level of design. But the tools are becoming easier and easier to use for more people to be able to achieve that effect. To that end, here are a few ways that designers will be achieving these web design trends.

Website Animation

Without a shadow of a doubt, we’ll be seeing many more website animations… to name just a few kinds: more complex button animations, page transitions, new ways to use hover states, and on-page animations. Basically, the sky is the limit!

Of course, designers will still need to exercise caution. While web capabilities have increased over the years, there is still the possibility of too much of a good thing.

As I said before, speed is still paramount. So, while websites will continue to become more animated and engaging, designers must still be judicious in their use of animations and white space to create a balanced and visually appealing layout.

Animations that are too lengthy, excessive, obnoxious, unnecessary — or worse yet, all of the above — will detract from the ultimate goal of a website, which is to supply the user with what they’re looking for while making it as quick as possible to respect their time. Just because users want to have fun with the website doesn’t mean they want to be bombarded by animations if they aren’t relevant!

Website Animation Micro-interactions

Micro-interactions are sort of tangentially related to animation, but I’ve been seeing it so much more recently on websites. As far as experiential improvements go, micro-interactions will be the MVP of web design trends in the years to come.

Essentially, micro-interactions are subtle animations or feedback responses triggered by user actions. They can be simple, like a button changing color on hover — or a subtle vibration on your phone when you successfully place an order. They’re the small, fun details that enhance user engagement and make the overall experience more dynamic and immersive!

Here are just a few types of micro-interactions that are currently being widely used and will continue to see use in 2024 web design trends and beyond:

  • Hover effects
  • Loading Animations
  • Menu Animations
  • Icon Animations
  • Scrolling enhancements like parallax, image transitions, or fades
  • Content rotation/flips
  • Haptic feedback

Interactive Web Content

In 2024, the web isn’t just about scrolling and clicking anymore. Once again, take a look at the Apple iPhone 15 landing page – it’s not exactly your typical scroll-and-click affair. They’ve included some interesting 3D models you can rotate around, almost like you’re looking through the latest gear in a store.

There are animated buttons at the bottom that stick to the bottom of a section as you scroll, which opens up a modal popup with more details and features. And, of course, sections with interactable menus that affect the image displayed on the screen.

This is a really tough balance to make, too — because you don’t want to make your users have to work to find pertinent information. So adding interactivity just for its sake won’t elevate your website. But when used in a measured way, the interactivity adds a layer of fun and adventure to the page.

Interactive content is making the web more fun and engaging for website visitors. Instead of just staring at a screen, you get to be a part of the action!

That’s why I think we’ll be seeing this web design trend continue in the foreseeable future. The possibilities for interactivity are endless — think interactive maps, virtual tours, and even completely gamified websites!

Experimental Navigation

In the ever-evolving landscape of web design, one trend that’s making waves is experimental navigation. This design trend is all about breaking away from the traditional navigation methods and exploring innovative ways to guide users through a website. Think dynamic circular menus, interactive navigation patterns, and other creative approaches that add a unique twist to the user experience.

One of the standout benefits of experimental navigation is its ability to create a memorable and engaging user experience. By stepping away from conventional navigation patterns, web designers can introduce elements of surprise and delight, keeping site visitors intrigued and invested in the website. This not only enhances user engagement but also helps in establishing a strong brand identity, setting your website apart from the competition.

However, it’s not without its challenges. Ensuring that the navigation remains intuitive and user-friendly, especially for first-time visitors, can be tricky. It often requires extensive testing and iteration to strike the right balance between creativity and usability.

For instance, imagine a website with a circular menu that morphs and adapts as you interact with it, or a navigation pattern that uses smooth animations and transitions to guide you through the content. These are just a few examples of how experimental navigation can add a layer of visual interest and interactivity to a website’s design, making it a trend to watch in 2024.

Kinetic Typography

Another exciting web design trend gaining traction is kinetic typography. This trend involves using animated text to create a dynamic and engaging user experience. By incorporating motion and animation, web designers can bring text to life, adding a sense of energy and movement to the website.

Kinetic typography is particularly effective in creating a sense of drama and excitement. Animated text can grab the user’s attention, highlight important information, and add visual interest to the website. It can also help establish a sense of hierarchy and emphasis, guiding users to the most critical parts of the content.

However, like any design trend, kinetic typography comes with its own set of challenges. Ensuring that the animations are smooth and seamless, and that they don’t distract from the main content, requires careful planning and execution. It often involves a significant amount of testing and iteration to get it just right.

Examples of kinetic typography in action include animated opening titles, scrolling text, and other creative approaches to animated text. For instance, a website might use animated text to draw attention to key information or to create a sense of emphasis on a particular section. By doing so, web designers can add a layer of visual interest and engagement, making the website more appealing to site visito

As we’re all probably aware, 2023 was a crazy time for technology. So, it stands to reason that 2024 will continue that craziness. Unless you’ve been living off the grid for the past year, you’ve no doubt heard an endless amount about AI this and AI that.

You may even be sick of hearing about it! That’s because even though it’s been the talk of all creative industries — especially those worried about whether AI will replace designers or copywriters — it’s also finding its way into every other industry.

With that said, I’m sure that it comes as no surprise that it’ll affect web design trends for 2024, too, including the increasing popularity of dark mode. But… perhaps it still may, in ways you haven’t considered yet. I think it will be a bit more nuanced than most people think.

The Obvious Stuff: Generative AI Images, Copywriting, and Code

Let’s get the most obvious use cases out of the way — since I’m sure you’ve already seen and heard all about it. As we’ve seen in the past year, current and future web design trends will use image-generation tools and copywriting/code-writing tools like ChatGPT. With near-instant, on-demand access to images or copy, we’ll see more websites incorporating them. Duh! No surprises there.

Now… moving on to the more interesting use cases!

AI-Integrated Website Functionality

More than just generative AI, I think we’ll also continue to see AI being used more interestingly — mostly on the user experience design side.

For example, I can see there will be a huge uptick in AI-based chat for customer support or sales onboarding. Now, I’m sure you’ve already experienced chatbots — but these third-party integrations for the web will be the next level of that.

I foresee them being used as a “concierge,” sort of like a blend of chatbot and search that can automatically guide you toward the pages you’re looking for or help answer questions you can’t find on the website itself. In conjunction with more voice-assistance technologies, this will become a game-changer for websites with a dense content library.

AI Website Testing 

On the other side of things, I’m sure we’ll also start to see AI being applied to the back end of web design with tools like A/B testing — I can foresee applications where AI can automatically make updates to your website based on the ongoing A/B analysis to a much more granular degree. For example, automatically iterating and adjusting layouts, copy, and images within designated pages of your website. This is likely a long way out, but I could see AI testing and iteration affecting entire websites in this way — making your website come “alive”, and evolve accordingly with your user’s behaviors and decisions.

As a side note — I’m also hoping we’ll start to see Quality Control AI tools that can help reduce the tedium of testing so web teams can invest more time in the creation side of things. Lemme tell ya, what I would give for an AI tool that automatically corrects typos and links across your website! If any developers are taking notes, you’re welcome — I’ll take a 5% commission for that idea 🙂.

AI Website Design

Finally, we’re also starting to see more and more website builders come out with their proprietary AI of all kinds. Divi has included its own AI that allows you to generate and modify images, website copywriting, and code — all inside of the builder. While yes, you can still do those exact same things separately, its convenience will become standard across the board in no time flat.

Remember when the thought of listening to music on your phone seemed silly because you could use your Sony Discman Portable CD player for that? Yeah… case in point.

In more drastic uses of AI in web design trends, Framer, among other builder platforms, has developed an AI that can generate your entire website with a prompt. And I think there may be some legitimate use cases for this — what comes to mind immediately are people creating DIY websites or projects with lower budgets.

For designers, I could maybe see this being used to test out a few different styles or “moods” for client approval before committing to the proper website development process.

You may think that sounds kind of unenthusiastic — well, it sort of is. Much like other “website generators” that came before AI, I’m not exactly impressed just yet.

Of course, in theory, this is very impressive, but I think we’re still a very long way off before it resembles anything close to a standard practice. Until AI website design can get to the point where it can automatically interpret how to set up the exact website infrastructure you need, set up all relevant third-party integrations, follow branding guidelines, and other miscellaneous functionality… someone is going to need to go in manually and tool those things around. It’s just the nature of the beast.

By nature, websites are highly tailored to the business’s specific needs. These needs span a wide breadth (assets, copy, animation, video, interactivity… it’s not exactly straightforward to create something unique and bespoke). This is especially true for websites trying to stand out in saturated fields. 

Ethics & Legality

However, and probably most crucially, AI ethics and legality must be considered. I’m not a luddite forbidding its use, but rather urging awareness and mindfulness. Remember that this intriguing technology is very young. Unfortunately, some people create AI models in bad faith or are unaware of the consequences. When utilizing AI, check for these:

  • Training on artwork or other materials without consent & IP Infringement
  • Being susceptible to bias or inaccuracies
  • Issues with copyright and ownership of AI-generated materials
  • Lack of transparency
  • Data privacy violations
  • Other legal issues
  • And more

As such, please be sure to use AI ethically and responsibly.

Accessibility and User Experience

In the realm of web design, accessibility and user experience are paramount. A website that is accessible and easy to use not only creates a positive user experience but also ensures inclusivity for all users, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

Prioritizing accessibility and user experience means using clear and concise language, intuitive navigation, and other accessibility features. This approach helps create a website that is easy to navigate and use, even for users with disabilities. By doing so, web designers can reduce frustration and anxiety, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in the website.

Honestly, it’s hard to say exactly how websites will continue to evolve after this year. Because historically, there haven’t been any huge upsets in the field of website design. In the past 30 years of its existence, the main changes have resulted from improving internet speeds and computer processing power. In that sense, its growth has been predictable — we’ve seen a clear, natural progression in how well-designed websites have become over the years. 

The 2020s are the first years in which that natural trend has been disrupted by a new technology. The wildcard I’m talking about is, of course, AI. And since its applications are so widespread, it’s hard to say how far it’ll change the game. I have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll start moving towards truly “living” websites in the future, where AI can make adjustments or serve catered content to users on the fly.

My best guess is that the change AI brings to web design will be “invisible”, in a sense — most of it will have to do with operations that work in the background that we won’t be able to “see” as obviously.

But on the more visual side of things, I think the other game-changers will continue to be Website Builders — because they democratize who can create websites by removing more of the technical know-how and tedium from the equation.

Website builders remove the technical aspect from the equation, eliminating the need for web designers to be particularly multi-faceted. Instead of juggling many roles, web designers may now concentrate on one area at a time, giving their work greater visual refinement.

Mobile devices are the primary way people use the internet now — so it shouldn’t be too surprising to hear that over half of all the website traffic in the world comes from that magic device in your pocket! However, desktop users are often neglected in mobile-first design approaches, suggesting that this method may not adequately address the needs of businesses that rely on desktop traffic.

However, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. As developers we build for both so your audience can have the same brand experience across all devices. More on that later.

So, if you tried to create a layout design for each possible size manually… well, let’s say you’d make Sisyphus’s job look pretty easy.

In its simplest form, responsive web design allows you to create a website that seamlessly responds to any screen size or device, giving you a consistent experience regardless of which device you’re using it on. Hover actions and animations, for example, are standard on desktops but not permitted on mobile devices because you can only touch the device. There are no “in-between” states. That is why you should adopt a mobile-first design philosophy instead. This way, you can design the site so that people understand how to interact with it intuitively, resulting in a better overall user experience.

Applying a Mobile-First design approach ensures you’re optimizing from the bottom up. If your website loads fast on mobile, then you can be sure it will also load fast on desktop—but the reverse isn’t always true.

If you’ve been religiously following Google’s algorithm updates, this is probably no surprise since they first introduced an update favoring mobile-optimized sites back in 2015.

Like any reputable business, Google has its user experience first and foremost in mind. So you can see why they’d rather award a better rank to a website that can provide their clients with a better mobile experience than those without.

This means that websites with a poor mobile experience will be negatively impacted by this change. So, I recommend making your website mobile-friendly a very high priority if it isn’t already.

Remember, with the increasing use of mobile devices for local searches, ensuring your site is mobile-friendly is more crucial than ever for your SEO – search engine optimization.

Remember what I said about looking up restaurants on the couch earlier? Well, it’s especially true on the go as well — mobile is often a user’s first choice for searching for businesses to solve a problem they have. So having a site that takes advantage of mobile first design will help you with local search visibility—big time!

The Bottom Line: With mobile devices as people’s first choice for internet access, Google now uses mobile websites primarily for indexing purposes. This makes mobile-first design more critical than ever regarding organic discoverability in SERPs.

In my experience with mobile-first design, making strategic choices is crucial to ensuring a user-centric experience. Typography, button sizes, and content prioritization are just a few key elements of that experience you need to nail down. Let’s look at some strategies you can implement in your mobile-first design approach.

Content Layout

Since the viewing experience on mobile devices is vertical, websites are more centered around scrolling down the page rather than having a ton of horizontal space to lay out your content. As such, the mobile-first design emphasizes the importance of choosing your “stacking order” wisely.

The goal is to place the content you need your viewers to see toward the top of the page. Since user attention spans are limited, not including the most important content up top risks your viewers not finding what they’re looking for. 

Website Typography

Choose easily legible fonts that are easily read on smaller screen sizes. There’s no need to get funky or artsy when it comes to body copy. The halmark is elegant and easy to read.

A good rule of thumb to use is to choose fonts with a taller x-height — this refers to the height of the lowercase letters. Fonts with taller x-heights are much easier to read at smaller sizes, which is a perfect use case on mobile.

You can still use flashier fonts for larger headings, but I recommend using an easily visible sans serif for smaller body content.

We use Google’s Open Sans for most body copy text on websites. Part of the reason is the amount of space—known as “kerning”—between characters. Google describes Open Sans as “optimized for print, web, and mobile interfaces and has excellent legibility characteristics in its letterforms.”

Buttons are a cornerstone of website design — and on mobile, they must be sized appropriately. The sizes of our fingers are static… we can’t exactly change that! Your buttons should be big enough to be pressed comfortably on mobile devices. And if multiple buttons are next to each other, ensure enough spacing between them so your users don’t accidentally misclick on the other one.

Where you place your buttons is just as important as how big they are. Take a quick exercise yourself. How far can your thumb reach out comfortably if you hold your phone without shifting it in one hand? Unless you’re Mister Fantastic, probably not that far. The last thing you want to do is make it difficult for someone to click your (Call To Action) CTA button while still on the fence. 

The aim of most websites is conversions.

The exception to the rule is your navigation buttons (like a hamburger menu): this is fine because the user is already trying to go elsewhere, so you’re not breaking their flow on the current page.

Popups Suck:

The best practice I can offer for popups on mobile can be summed up with one word: don’t.

I don’t know anyone who has ever said, “Oh boy, a popup advertisement!” And I feel pretty safe betting that the same is true for you. Sure, popups can sometimes have their place—but that place is not on mobile devices! Be judicious when applying a pop-up, and ask yourself if you truly need it.

Once again, I’ll refer to the smaller real estate you have on a screen… and how annoying it is for A) your whole screen to shift focus abruptly from what you were doing. And B) how hard it can be to find maliciously small or hidden “X”s to close out of them. Make sure you have a super easy way to exit a pop-up if you need to apply one.

Mobile performance optimization techniques

When designing, you must keep mobile webpage speed in mind — it’s non-negotiable! While mobile networks have made significant progress in catching up to traditional internet at home, it’s still crucial for your site to load fast for your user experience. And since your mobile speed is also tied to SEO, having a faster mobile experience will bump you up in the rankings.

Proper Image Sizing & Compression: While your images may resize responsively, if they were sized for desktop use, you’re killing your mobile load time. Remember, mobile devices are physically much smaller than PC monitors, so images can be saved at a smaller pixel height and width and still display crisply. This will save your users from waiting longer to download your images and using more of their network data.

Limit Animation: While website animation adds an extra layer of intrigue and interactivity, if you aren’t careful, it can weigh down your site’s speed, especially on mobile. Test your page speed frequently and use only as many animations as your website and host can handle.

Video Use & Compression: Video is a fantastic way to differentiate your website, and if it’s a high-quality asset, that can make your site really stand out. However, video file sizes are usually pretty large in terms of dimensions and file sizes. Converting your video file with proper compression and encoding or using next-gen formats like WEBM can save you a lot on file size.

Also, you should always consider using a container with an external link to YouTube or Vimeo. This way, you don’t have to host the large video file locally.

Premium Caching Plugins: While this is technically a cross-platform upgrade, it’s still important to note its use on mobile. Using a premium caching WordPress plugin like FlyingPress will allow you to leverage a full suite of speed improvements like Lazy Loading, Minifying CSS/JS, and many other options to boost your website’s speed on mobile (and every other version of your site)!

Invest in a Good Hosting Service: This one is another cross-platform upgrade, but this is where it all begins regarding speed. You can optimize your website as much as you want, but it will only get you so far if you aren’t using a high-speed hosting service.

Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test: If you ask me, there’s no better way to test your website’s user-friendliness than using PageSpeed Insights. This tool will systematically break down every single pain point on your site—even some pretty granular stuff — and tell you how to improve on it.

While it can be pretty strict, it’s the best way to ensure compliance with Google’s new mobile-first indexing standards.

When designing for mobile devices, it’s essential to avoid common mistakes that can lead to a poor user experience. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for:

  • Not Using Responsive Design Techniques: Without responsive design, your website may not display correctly on different screen sizes, leading to a disjointed user experience.
